Massive Attack - Heligoland

The pioneering force behind the rise of trip-hop, Massive Attack were among the most innovative and influential groups of their generation; their hypnotic sound — a darkly sensual and cinematic fusion of hip-hop rhythms, soulful melodies, dub grooves, and choice samples — set the pace for much of the dance music to emerge throughout the 1990s, paving the way for such acclaimed artists as Portishead, Sneaker Pimps, Morcheeba, UNKLE and Tricky, himself a Massive Attack alumnus.

Heligoland is the fifth regular studio album, entitled after the German archipelago of the same name. It had been officially released in February 2010 – seven years after the release of their previous non-soundtrack, standalone studio album, 100th Window.

Frontman Brian Molko said on the concept of the album: We've made a record about choosing life, about choosing to live, about stepping out of the darkness and into the light. Not necessarily turning your back on the darkness because it's there, it's essential; it's a part of who you are, but more about the choice of standing in the sunlight instead

Led Zeppelin - BBC Sessions

BBC Sessions is a compilation album featuring studio sessions and a live concert recorded by English rock group Led Zeppelin for the BBC. It was released on 11 November 1997, by Atlantic Records. This was the first release of new Led Zeppelin material in 15 years. Disc 1 consists of material from four different 1969 BBC sessions. Disc 2 contains most of the 1 April 1971 concert from the Paris Theatre in London.

Countless bootlegs of these recordings circulated for years before the official release. This release was widely welcomed by Led Zeppelin fans as the first live release since The Song Remains the Same in 1976. Others have criticized the decision to edit some of the songs and drop others that were recorded for the BBC. Most notable are one session from 1969 which included the unreleased song “Sunshine Woman,” and about 22 seconds of the “Whole Lotta Love” medley from 1971.

It was released on 28 October 2002 in the United Kingdom and on 7 October 2003 in the United States. Sneaker Pimps - Splinter

Splinter is the second full studio album from Sneaker Pimps. Released in 1999, Splinter is the first release from the band without Kelli Dayton singing lead vocals; she was replaced by founding band member Chris Corner.

The sound of the album was a great change from their first album. Most notably it was a darker sound which favored acoustic guitars and dark lyrics.
Many fans consider the album to widely underrated with poor sales and very little media or critical attention.
The cover of the album features the back of Chris' head. He had previously not felt up to the responsibility of being a 'front man' but has since gone on to embrace this through IAMX.

Thom York - Feeling Pulled Apart by Horses

"Feeling Pulled Apart by Horses" and "The Hollow Earth" are songs by Thom Yorke, released as a double A-side 12-inche single on 21 September 2009, and scheduled for a download release on 6 October 2009. The vinyl was limited to 8000 copies worldwide.

Yorke revealed the release through Radiohead's online blog, "Dead Air Space", and commented that the songs are released "loosely" under his name. The first song, "Feeling Pulled Apart by Horses", was written and performed by Yorke with Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood out of a song Yorke reported to have started working on at his home in 2001, and which has been played live twice—once in 2001, as a full-band "snarling metal" song and once acoustically in 2005. "The Hollow Earth" is newer by comparison, described as a "bass menace" coming out of the sessions for The Eraser.

The Dreamers

The Dreamers are an Anglo/Swedish duo featuring Sarah Nyberg Pergament and Kevin Wright. Sarah has previously recorded as Action Biker and Kevin as Always and Mr. Wright.  Meeting at a Swedish music festival in 2004 the pair began by writing a song “Petit Nuage” in late 2005. Encouraged by this an album began taking shape being recorded mostly in London with Sarah’s vocals being sent from Stockholm and Helsinki. The record is now finished and titled “Day for Night”. Top Swedish label Friendly Noise released it on October 2007. The band made their live debut at the Luminaire in London and more shows followed in Scandanavia.

The Dreamers influences combine many disparate elements including jazz pop and soundtrack music. Although the music is often melancholic the Dreamers hope to make (to paraphrase Michel Legrand speaking of Tom Jobim) “the sad music that makes the world a better place.”

(My song recommended for this album is Petit Nuage and So Near So Far)
